Shining Light On Traction Alopecia

Traction alopeciaThere is some concern amongst many women in regards to losing their hair. One major source of hair loss is a common, gradual hair loss due to Traction alopecia. This type of hair loss is gradual, and sometimes painful due to the causes. The cause of this is primarily by pulling force being applied to the hair at the scalp and further. If that is not too clear for you, consider that this strikes men and women that wear their hair in a tight ponytail, pigtails, or braids. It occasionally is seen in long-haired toy dogs whose owners insist on using barrettes to keep hair out of dogs’ faces. This sort of gradual hair loss takes time to fully set in, but is growing among many different walks of life and is a concern for many.

Ponytail hairstyleTraction Alopecia is a substantial risk in hair weaves which can be worn either conceal hair loss or sometimes for purely cosmetic purposes. A weave is sometimes used in conjunction with a tight braid, adorning a woman’s hair with a lot of tight pulling at the scalp level to give the appearance of thicker, or more fluid hair. The weave requires maintenance and reattachment and sometimes can cause damage due to frequent tightening and pulling on hair that might be at risk, and is constantly snug. This will cause tension to already at risk hair, expediting the hair loss process even further.

Many hairstyles seem to be a root cause of this gradual hair loss, but none more severe and easy to identify as the Croydon facelift. This type of hairstyle is often worn by young women, and involves pulling the hair back tight and tied in a bun or ponytail at the back. The results of this hair style is not only a cosmetic facelift look, but a clean and “proper” sort of outward appearance. The hairstyle is often times worn by young women in the United Kingdom and is portrayed many times by the media as women from the lower social classes such as the Chav culture. The origin of the style has been linked to history through the ancient Egyptians, most popular Queen Nefertiti, whom may have worn this style of hair, according to documentary that was recently ran on UK’s channel 4.

Traction Alopecia might not be a term that you  hear often in life, however, those that are suffering from this have a scarred self image. The gradual hair loss is sometimes accompanied by scars at the scalp level where the hair is literally being pulled out or has fallen out, which is not cosmetically attractive to many people. Prevention is the key way to avoid this hair loss, and that’s simply to not pull too hard on the hair through the roots and out. Because this is a gradual hair loss, it’s easy to ignore the warning signs and not take a closer look at the scalp at times. However, it is important to make sure that you’re taking care of your hair overall and know that consistently putting your hair through tightening, weaving, or simply over using certain products may result in such a drastic change for you and your physical appearance.
